Vital’s Waste to Energy Facility Set to Add 18MWe of Energy to the Grid

Vital Energi have just signed a major contract to develop a new energy from waste facility near Burton Upon Trent that is set to contribute to greening the grid by generating 18MWe of electricity from non-recyclable Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

The Drakelow Energy from Waste plant has been designed by the Vital Energi team and will be built, owned and operated by the Vital Energi Group. In addition to generating 18MWe of low-carbon electricity, the facility will also make a valuable contribution to diverting waste from landfill with the capability of processing 169,000 tonnes of non-recyclable Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) each year.

Vital Energi is investing its own technical and financial resources into this facility with the balance of the investment being provided from external funding sources.

The UK faces many environmental challenges and this facility is an exciting opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and divert waste from landfill. We are extremely excited to be delivering and operating this facility, which will make a positive contribution to the UK’s low-carbon infrastructure. We have worked with a team of industry experts in the Energy from Waste (EfW) sector to bring this project to market and we would like to thank them for their contributions to deliver a major project that will contribute to the UK’s low carbon infrastructure.

Ashley Malin, Vital’s Project Development Director

The Vital Energi team have been supported by a range of specialist companies and stakeholders which includes:

    • Squire Patton Boggs – Provided legal support for all aspects of the transaction from the outset to financial close.  The team was led by Corporate and Infrastructure Partners James Fitzgibbon and Nick Helm respectively, and also included Mark Gaffney (Real Estate), Rinku Bhadoria (Energy Finance) and Patrick Ford (Tax).
    • Royal Haskoning – Have been the technical adviser on the project, along with providing additional support on the key technology islands ensuring what is procured and designed aligns with proven market standards.  They will have a key role going forwards as the “owners engineer” to ensure correct standards are adhered to throughout the construction process.
    • Future Earth Energy (FEE) – Are the developer of the scheme who set up and owned “ProjectCo” and procured the planning permission, environmental permit, land option, grid connection and the fuel supplier for the Drakelow facility.  This was all acquired by Vital Energi during the contract closure process and the FEE team integrated seamlessly into the financial close of the project and retains a longer-term interest in the project.
    • EON – Own the land on which the Drakelow Energy from Waste Facility will be built and have provided a long term (33 year) lease and laydown area lease which allows for adequate storage of equipment and materials away from the main construction site.  This project is the first fully manned tenant on this exciting new “Drakelow Energy Park” industrial development.
    • Beauparc Group worked with Brian McCabe (MD) and his team and has been awarded the exclusive fuel supply agreement and will supply Vital Energi with 169,000 tonnes of refuse derived fuel over the long-term supply contract. Beauparc Group are the UK & Ireland’s leading producer and exporter of RDF & SRF, supplying over 1.3m tonnes annually to contracts throughout Ireland, the UK, European & Worldwide markets.  Beauparc support the production of RDF & SRF through the annual collection and treatment of 4 million tonnes of waste from their UK & Ireland network of waste management sites.

The RDF is combusted, and the syngas produced during this process is then consumed by the boiler to create steam which then drives the 18MWe steam turbine which generates electricity.  An additional benefit of the project is that Vital Energi have designed the facility so that the heat generated can be used to provide heat and hot water for nearby developments should demand arise.

The new energy from waste facility is scheduled to be completed by 2023 and Vital Energi will have a 30-year concession to operate the facility.

Vital’s Net Zero Apprenticeship Programme Named Training Initiative of the Year

Our Net Zero Apprenticeship programme has taken top honours at this year’s H&V Awards. The programme, which is now in its third year, scooped the Training Initiative of the Year category at the London-based awards ceremony.

Jenny Jackson, Vital Energi’s Resources Manager explained, “The main way to assess the success of a training programme is to look at its graduates and we are so proud of the young men and women who have taken part in our Net Zero apprenticeships programme. We are delighted that our training initiative was recognised at the awards ceremony, but more importantly, we are thrilled with the impact our apprentices are making on the business and are sure we have uncovered several future leaders of the net zero sector.”

We created the programme in response to the skills gap in the low-carbon energy sector, which is a potential hurdle to the UK meeting its Net Zero Targets.   The Net Zero Apprenticeship Programme, which included a £2m investment in a new Training Academy, sees apprentices work across a range of departments, such as commercial, design and work winning, as well as undertaking on-site placement at some of our projects throughout the UK.  The scheme has been successful and Vital now employ 27 apprentices throughout the business.

Vital articulated a vison for the future and have invested in it. Taking a view on not just technical and trade skills but also social impact and value. The benefits to Vital are longer term but clearly articulated and provides a good model for broader industry.”

    Judges’ Comments, H&V Awards

Alongside their time at Vital, apprentices take a level three apprenticeship with City of Liverpool College, with some graduates continuing to take a degree-level apprenticeship. The programme offers two pathways; craft and technical, and we also appoint apprentices in a range of support services such as Marketing and Finance.

Building Services Engineering Apprentice, Stacey Brindle attended the awards and said, “I’ve loved the opportunities the Net Zero apprenticeship have given me and it’s definitely brought me to a place where I think my long-term future will be spent in the industry.  I know how hard my colleagues, tutors and mentors work to support me and I’m really pleased that their work has been recognised with an award.”

Vital’s Net Zero Apprenticeship’s Programme Shortlisted At H&V Awards

We are delighted that the hard work and achievements of our Net Zero Apprenticeships have been recognised after the programme was shortlisted in the Training Initiative of the Year category at this year’s Heating & Ventilation Awards.

This category is dedicated to recognising new training initiatives within the heating and ventilation industry and successful entrants must detail the high levels of planning and implementation, demonstrate the positive impacts of the programme and show evidence of increased profits or productivity.

The Net Zero Apprenticeships initiative, which is heading into its third year, will now go forwards to be judged by a team of industry experts, with the winner being announced in a ceremony at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel in late November.

So far, the Net Zero Apprenticeship programme has seen us recruit 21 candidates in two years, with a further 6 apprentices signed up for the 2023/24.  Jenny Jackson, Vital Energi’s Resources Manager explained, “Being shortlisted in this category is a big honour as it not only recognises the outstanding achievements of our apprentices, but also the investment Vital Energi have made in the future of the UK’s low-carbon workforce.”

It is essential for us, as a nation, to inspire, cultivate and retain young talent so that they can take their place in the future workforce. I’d like to thank all the apprentices and the staff who have worked so hard to support them over the last few years and hope you all feel very proud of this achievement.

Vital’s Framework Value Passes The £11 Billion Mark

It’s been a busy period for Vital Energi’s work-winning teams and the last three months have seen us win eight lots across seven frameworks with a combined value of over £3.5 billion.  This sees the total combined value of frameworks we sit on pass the £12.5 billion mark.

The frameworks we have been added to in December, January & February include:

    • Procure Plus– Low and Zero Carbon Technologies £195m
    • Procure Plus– Low and Zero Carbon Technologies £1.53bn
    • Procurement for Housing Scotland EESSH2 Framework – £100m
    • ETL – Energy Performance Contracting Framework – £500
    • Go Neutral Smart Energy Framework Agreement – £160m
    • Scotland Excel Energy Efficiency £800m
    • Fusion 21 Decarbonisation Energy Efficiency Framework £250m
    • Scottish Water Horizons £13.5m

Vital Energi were our NDEE contractor for both our NDEE Baskets, installing Energy Conservation Measures into 26 properties of various sizes, usage and availability. The NDEE contracts were a new way of working for both of us and it was obvious from the outset that its success would be dependent on working together. Vital Energi fully support this approach and were very sensitive not only to the needs of the contract but what was required to support the users of the properties. They showed high level of respect to the occupiers, implement changes and additions at short notice and ensure their Health, Safety and Welfare at all times. This respect extended to their own employees, sub-contractors and Council staff. Their commitment to our “Community Benefits” requirements resulted in universal gratitude from the recipients

Alex Gibson – Dundee City Council (NDEE), Team Leader – City Development Department

The quality of the bid was very high, we didn’t receive many submissions to compare it to but the level of detail in terms of upfront energy assessments was very good and better than any of the others. Other bids made assumptions on generic energy saving figures. Vital measured and quantified everything based on actual data. The bid was clear and concise, I don’t think it could have been improved, it was a strong bid and very professional.

Dewi Day, Sustainability Advisor , Aberystwyth University (RE:FIT)

Gemma Dyson, Proposals Manager explains, “We want to be able to help the widest range of organisations on their journey to net zero and this means we have to sit on a wide-range of frameworks to have access to bid on these projects. Frameworks also provide a vehicle for our clients to procure work quickly, as and when funding becomes available. The frameworks market has grown significantly in recent years and I think it’s a demonstration of the growth of the sector, and Vital Energi in particular, that we now sit on 28 frameworks and 11 dynamic purchasing systems.

“Whilst the value of the frameworks is impressive, the variety of technologies, sectors and specialisms we cover should be noted as it’s a great indicator of how we have grown our capabilities, knowledge and skills base over the last few years.”
