Once the project is complete, the Tower of Light will act as the chimney for the low-carbon energy centre.<\/p>\n<p>The network will generate low-carbon heat and power for the city, helping Manchester to reach its ambition of becoming zero-carbon by 2038 at the latest.\u00a0 It will initially serve seven iconic city centre buildings and has the potential to grow by connecting further buildings across the city centre in the future.\u00a0 The first buildings to be connected to the network will be Manchester Town Hall and Town Hall Extension, Central Library, Manchester Central Convention Centre, The Bridgewater Hall, Heron House and the Manchester Art Gallery.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme is projected to save an initial 1,600 tonnes of carbon emissions per year and the energy centre will become even more efficient as additional buildings are connected.<\/p>\n<p>Containing a 3.3MWe CHP engine and two 12MW gas boilers, the energy centre will generate electricity and harness the recovered heat from this process for distribution via a 2km <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitalenergi.co.uk\/district-heating-cooling\/\">district heating network<\/a>, which will supply heat for the buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme has been part-funded by a \u00a32.87m grant from the Government\u2019s Heat Network Investment Project (HNIP), with Manchester City Council being one of the first local authorities to receive this funding.<\/p>\n<p>Anthony Shawcross, Senior Construction Manager for Vital Energi commented; \u201cThis project is much more intricate than a standard flue due to its complex geometry but will hopefully become an iconic part of Manchester\u2019s skyline.\u00a0 We\u2019re delighted with how smoothly the installation went and we hope the people of Manchester will now enjoy it for many years.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"quote\">\n<div class=\"wrap quote__wrap\">\n<div class=\"swiper-container js-simple-quotes\">\n<div class=\"swiper-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"swiper-slide\">\n<div class=\"quote__holder\"><span class=\"quote__icon\"> <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"36\" height=\"28\" viewbox=\"0 0 36 28\"><g fill=\"#F58220\" fill-rule=\"evenodd\"><path d=\"M12.319 0h3.648a2 2 0 0 1 1.838 2.788l-10.286 24A2 2 0 0 1 5.681 28H2.033a2 2 0 0 1-1.838-2.788l10.286-24A2 2 0 0 1 12.319 0zM30.319 0h3.648a2 2 0 0 1 1.838 2.788l-10.286 24A2 2 0 0 1 23.681 28h-3.648a2 2 0 0 1-1.838-2.788l10.286-24A2 2 0 0 1 30.319 0z\"><\/path><\/g><\/svg> <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"quote__holder\">\n<p class=\"quote__text\">The Tower of Light is an impressive new landmark for Manchester and a symbol of Manchester&#8217;s ambitious aim of becoming a zero-carbon city by 2038 at the latest.
